Essay on the Democracy of Nepal

Raju Bhattarai

Although having a long history of monarchy and authoritarian government, Nepal, a landlocked nation hidden back in the Himalayas, began together its journey toward democracy in the early 1950s. People are in control in democracy by representatives they selected for themselves. Government works out by, for, and on the basis of the people. The population as a whole has the ability to select the government of their selecting with this kind of government. For a very long period, the people of Nepal worked courageously to establish democracy there. At the moment, we live in a Lok-Tantrik country.

The desire of people to bring down the Rana dynasty’s autocratic rule gave origin to the democratic movement in Nepal in the 1950s. It had been there for 104 years in Nepal. The will and goals of the people weren’t honored. For rights and freedom, people fought against Ranas. We observe Falgun as Democracy Day every year because Nepal achieved democracy in 2007 B.S. People were unable to improve the democracy they received in 2007. Therefore, they had to fight for it once more in 2046 and 2062/063. The previous movement was successful in bringing about a notable transformation in the nation. In our history, we had kingship for around 240 years. Due to this movement, it became a republic. We currently live in a national, secular state.

To further reinforce the rule of law, however, there is much work to be done. Political stability through elected administration is the most important need. The new constitution that our constituent assembly drafts should reflect the desires and goals of all people, representing all races and creeds. Then, everyone will have an equal chance to develop their personalities.

The movement of the people is led through Loktantra. Citizens are given a variety of freedoms under it, including the freedoms of expression, religion, movement, as well as association, among others. It guarantees equity. Public opinion is the foundation of Loktantra. In a democratic nation like Nepal, the government is required to operate in line with the wishes and aspirations of the people. There is no discrimination based on the grounds of race, caste, religion, or sex. Democracy promotes patriotic sentiments and nationalism.

It has been said to have certain drawbacks despite these positive aspects. Some argue that this is based on false idealism. The minority is silenced by the majority. Only wealthy people win elections. Above all, employees suffer abuse and there are partisan crimes against humanity.

The most ideal form of government is a democracy, disregarding its previously mentioned defect. Nothing else in terms of government can replace it. Making our loktantra powerful and securing the rights and liberties of the populace are our responsibilities.
