The Company Man (Summary) – BBS Second Year
The Company Man is a short story written by Ellen Goodmen. The story shows that each and every person in the business world is looked through the eyes of money. This story describes about how a company man is treated in the modern corporate world. Here in the story, the man who works and spends in the company is treated like a machine. In this world, the person who is purely dedicated in the job is never praised and awarded and the man is understood only in production level. The emotion does not work here. The modern contemporary corporate world treats the company man like a working machine. He is treated well until he works in the company.
In this story, Phil works hard and he is one of the six vice presidents and is an equally competitor for the promotion. But when he died, the president only shows the superficial lamentation on him. His funeral has been attended by all but only his family showed the real grief. He was a simple man and he never smoked. He had a wife, two sons and a daughter. They don’t have much crying. His wife had left her job after getting married and bearing children. She spend her whole life for taking care of his family. He had twenty-four-year-old newly married daughter and the youngest son of twenty. He died of heart attack at the age of fifty. Phil does not have much identity after his death. He is blamed of his own overweight.
We can see that after the funeral, in the evening, there has been a secrete announcement about replacing him. His post can not be left vacant. So, the company never treat the employee in respectable way. The superficial behavior of that the company showed at the time of funeral is very painful. The company exploits him.
कम्पनी म्यान एलेन गुडमेन द्वारा लेखिएको एक छोटो कथा हो। कथाले व्यापारिक संसारमा प्रत्येक व्यक्तिलाई पैसाको नजरले हेरेको देखाउँछ। यो कथाले आधुनिक कर्पोरेट संसारमा एक कम्पनी म्यानलाई कस्तो व्यवहार गरिन्छ भनेर वर्णन गर्दछ। यहाँ कथामा कम्पनीमा काम गर्ने मानिसलाई मेसिन जस्तै व्यवहार गरिएको छ। यस संसारमा काममा विशुद्ध समर्पित व्यक्तिको कहिल्यै प्रशंसा र सम्मान हुँदैन र मानिसलाई उत्पादन स्तरमा मात्र बुझिन्छ। यहाँ भावनाले काम गर्दैन। आधुनिक समकालीन कर्पोरेट जगतले कम्पनी म्यानलाई काम गर्ने मेसिनको रूपमा व्यवहार गर्दछ। कम्पनीमा काम नगरेसम्म उनको राम्रो व्यवहार हुन्छ ।
यस कथामा, फिल कडा परिश्रम गर्दछ । उहाँ मरेपछि मालिकले उनि माथि सतही विलाप मात्र देखाउछन्। उनको अन्त्येष्टिमा सबैको उपस्थिति थियो तर उनको परिवारले मात्र वास्तविक शोक देखायो। उनी एक साधारण मानिस थिए र उनले कहिल्यै धुम्रपान गरेनन। उनका श्रीमती, दुई छोरा र एक छोरी थिए । उनकी श्रीमतीले विवाह गरेर सन्तान जन्माएपछि जागिर छोडेकी थिइन् । उसले आफ्नो सम्पूर्ण जीवन आफ्नो परिवारको हेरचाह गर्न बिताउँछ। उनको चौबीस वर्षकी नवविवाहित छोरी र बीस वर्षको कान्छो छोरा थिए । उनको ५० वर्षको उमेरमा हृदयघातका कारण निधन भएको थियो । उनको मृत्यु पछि फिलको धेरै पहिचान छैन। उनी आफ्नै मोटोपनका लागि दोषी छन्।
अन्त्येष्टिपछि साँझ उहाँलाई प्रतिस्थापन गर्ने गोप्य घोषणा भएको देख्न सकिन्छ । उनको पद खाली छोड्न मिल्दैन । त्यसैले, कम्पनीले कर्मचारीलाई कहिल्यै सम्मानजनक व्यवहार गर्दैन। अन्त्येष्टिको समयमा कम्पनीले देखाएको सतही व्यवहार निकै पीडादायी छ । कम्पनीले उनको जिबनभर शोषण गर्छ।
