What is an Academic Writing? 

Academic writing is a kind of writing used in academic field such as at universities, colleges and schools. There is not exact definition of academic writing but it is to fulfill a requirement of a formal institution, researchers, and widely used in many writing assignment given in an academic setting. There are some characteristics of academic writing: The style of academic writing is more formal and it focuses on the facts not the writer’s opinion. It does not use any kind of slang word or jargon. It has a fix writing format or system.

Academic writing is used in dissertation, theses, research papers, articles, translation, book reviews, abstracts, summary, resume and many other areas. It is a discipline that introduces the students about the variety of needs. It is a kind of flexible course in which students of all subjects and levels practise those aspects of the writing which are the most important for their studies.  

Academic writing is formal in nature. It seems to be more objective and impersonal. It needs to be accurate in selection of vocabulary and structure. It does not use conversational and colloquial language. In academic writing, information, facts and arguments and figures should be precise. Consistency is also the basic feature of academic writing. It usually uses complex sentence and passive voice. It must be free from any kind of mistakes and errors.
